Myspace Privacy Settings 101
My space privacy settings comprise of following main categories:
• Basic profile information
• Stream settings
• Profile content
• Visitor settings
The basic profile information is by default set to be public and anyone on the internet having a myspace account can view that information.
Your basic profile information contains your display name, your real name if and only if allowed by you, your gender, age, location, profile picture and a URL that you might have specified. This information can also be searched by a search engine like Google.
Your stream settings comprise of the titles of content and the original content that you viewed on the internet and the audio streams that you have listened to on the internet.
They may consist of a song, a video or a movie trailer. You have the option to allow or disallow your friends and contacts to view these settings or not. If you do not want to share your content you can simply change the settings to your appropriate ones under the My published activities settings option.
The profile content section is dedicated to the content that you have uploaded on your my space profile yourself. This includes your interests, your about me section, name of your college, school, company, organization, your favourite quotation, movies, singer, photo albums, videos and events.
Here again you have the ability to limit access to certain areas for your friends, or friends of friends or strangers. It depends upon your selected preferences.
The my visitors settings track your visits and the visits of your friends. If you have turned this option on and you visit a friend’s page and he too has got this option selected then he will be shown on his home page that his profile was viewed by you.
Similarly you will be shown the names (display names) of all the visitors who viewed your profile. The my visitors settings only works when the visitor and the host both have turned it on.
In working the myspace privacy settings are simple and easy to use. In front of every information tag you have the option of setting its visibility. If you set it to anyone , everybody will be able to view that information.
Anyone is the default setting for all 18 and above users. Choosing the only my friends option makes your content visible to only your friends and anyone not in your friend list will not be able to view your content. This is the default setting for all 18 below users.
Your photos, albums, videos, comments, sharable streams and blogs have per item privacy settings. Which means that you can chose any of the object to be hidden and at the same time opt to show the item of same kind and category. The events and playlist also have per item privacy settings and same rules apply to all playlists and events, however the streams are managed by your profile privacy settings and the per item privacy rule do not applies on streams.
